President’s Message

Welcome!  The Junior League of Amarillo is an organization of women who are committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  We have proudly served the Amarillo area for the past 92 years.  Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

JLA has been behind the scenes throughout our history, providing volunteerism and financial assistance to many organizations throughout the Amarillo area.  You can find Active and Sustaining members of JLA throughout the community on other non-profit boards and leadership, in civic leadership positions, and in corporate leadership positions.

This year we are focusing on our membership engagement, along with community service.  We are providing a group Done-In-A-Days open to all members.  This will provide opportunities for everyone to bond and meet each other.  There will be opportunities for family Done-In-A-Days, so the whole family can help the community while spending time with each other.  Typically, in the past, these were for community service only.  We are now opening them up for membership engagement – mixers, happy hours, etc.

We can not do this without all of our members.  Sustainers help sustain us, and we know we need to show our appreciation and involve them more.  Actives keep us moving, they are the ones on the front lines with our community projects and working behind the scenes figuring out the best way to raise money for our community, and where we are needed the most.  Provisionals are the ones that we are excited to see what they do.  They are the future of the league and we need to use this course to set them up for success.

We have used our COVID year to help reevaluate some of the structures of JLA.  We reduced our number of community projects, so we can provide more members at each organization instead of stretching our membership thin.  This way if things happen in our member’s lives and they need a break for a bit, we will still have members to help fulfill our obligations.  The Project Research and Development Committee is spending the year reevaluating how we can better impact the community in the focus area of Generational Poverty with Children.

One of our biggest changes is with our Provisional Course.  This year is our inaugural year for our SEMESTER Provisional course.  Currently, over 40 provisionals will be participating.  In this course, they will receive a condensed version of the past Provisional course but will become Active in January, and in the Spring of 2022, they will have check-ins and go straight into the community.  This will be a transition year to providing Fall and Spring semester courses.  Creating these semester courses will help with member satisfaction and increase membership numbers.

We have flipped flopped our biggest fundraiser Best of Texas from spring to fall to help with member burnout.  Dates of our fundraisers this year will be:

  • Best of Texas – October 15, 2021 – Rex Baxter Building
  • Golf Classic – April 8, 2022 – La Paloma
  • The Shoot – Spring 2022 – TBD

This year is going to be a redeveloping year.  Our membership and community needs are changing and as the Junior League of Amarillo, we need to be at the forefront to provide the best-trained women for our community to tackle generational poverty.  I am excited to see what this year brings and humbled to be the one to lead these amazing ladies.  Let’s work together to continue the Junior League Amarillo’s legacy in improving our amazing community.
