Community Projects 2016-2017

The Junior League will give approximately $32,000 back to the community through our projects AND Community Assistance Fund grants.  More than 5,000 volunteer hours will be given this fiscal year to the community projects listed below, as well as Best of Texas fundraiser, Rummage Sale and the Kids in the Kitchen Wellness Event:

Camp Alphie
JLA helped Camp Alphie celebrate 28 years this summer (July, 2016)!  Camp Alphie provides a place for children suffering from cancer, (or have survived cancer) as well as their families, to experience some new things, make new friends and connections, and relax - forget about their worries and enjoy a normal summer camp.  JLA volunteers assisted in setting up camp, organizing crafts, decorating, valet service (during camp check-in), and assisted with other camp activities.  Volunteers also helped with Parents Camp which is run in conjunction with Kids Camp.  Grant funds were used for snacks, water inflatables, decorations, golf cart rental (for staff use), and a camp dance.

Heal the City
Heal the City Clinic is a medical mission providing free quality urgent medical care and referral services with compassion and dignity to the uninsured of our community.  Our vision:  To provide for the medical needs of the uninsured while connecting them to the existing health community.
Hope and Healing Place
JLA volunteers are specially trained by the Hope & Healing Place in leadership and grief facilitator training sessions.  They then serve as support group leaders, participate in new family orientation and other duties associated with the support program.  Grant funds will be used towards program supplies and program support.  Volunteers also have an opportunity to help with a summer grief camp.

Salvation Army Angel Tree
From mid-October through mid-December, JLA volunteers will
assist families in completing and submitting applications.  Volunteers will man a table at Westgate Mall checking out angel tags and receiving returning gifts.  Set-up for pick-up day includes putting bikes together and organizing gifts.

Medical Center League House: JLA Signature Project    806-358-3759
Medical Center League House provides housing, comfort and support to families with an adult patient going through medical treatments in Amarillo, Texas.  There is a nightly charge of $45.00 to stay in one of the 31 private rooms.  For non-medical stays, the nightly charge is $50 (people coming for funerals, visiting nursing homes, assisted living and retirement centers, etc.)  This includes a living room with a TV, kitchen, dining room, laundry facilities at no charge, a multipurpose room, a prayer garden and WiFi available throughout the building. In addition to these amenities, staying at the Medical Center League House offers something perhaps even more significant- a nurturing and compassionate house.  JLA volunteers provide volunteer support to the MCLH by participating in any necessary capacity.
